In a stunning display of power hitting, Shimron Hetmyer propelled the Seattle Orcas to a thrilling three-wicket victory over MI New York in a Major League Cricket (MLC) encounter. Hetmyer's unbeaten 97 off just 40 balls, culminating in a last-ball six off Kieron Pollard, secured the highest successful run chase in MLC history as the Orcas overhauled a daunting 238-run target.
MI New York had earlier set a formidable target of 237/4, thanks to a blistering unbeaten 108 from captain Nicholas Pooran and a rapid 95 from Tajinder Dhillon. Pooran's innings included 7 fours and 8 sixes, while Dhillon's knock came off just 35 deliveries.
Despite the onslaught, the Orcas bowlers managed to grab a few wickets, with Gerald Coetzee and Kyle Mayers each taking two.
Seattle's chase began shakily, losing Josh Brown and Shayan Jahangir early. However, Kyle Mayers (37 off 20) and captain Sikandar Raza (30 off 9) counter-attacked to revive the innings. Heinrich Klaasen contributed a quickfire 26 off 13 before falling to Rushil Ugarkar.
Then came Hetmyer's game-changing innings. With the required run rate soaring, he took charge, smashing 5 fours and 9 sixes at a strike rate of 242.50.
The game went down to the wire, with five runs needed off the final ball. Hetmyer delivered, flicking Pollard over fine leg for a six, sending the Seattle camp into raptures.
Hetmyer, named Player of the Match, said, "This one is one of the best, because our backs were against the wall." He added that he aimed to take the game "as deep as possible."
