Rohit Sharma, reflecting on India's victorious campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, fondly recalled the significance of Barbados, stating, "It's the pitch where everything happened! It has been a year since India secured the T20 World Cup, ending a 17-year drought with a thrilling final victory over South Africa at Kensington Oval.
The final match was a tense affair, going down to the wire. India held their composure, ultimately clinching the title and bringing an end to years of near misses. The victory was the result of a dominant, unbeaten run throughout the tournament, showcasing the team's character and resilience.
A highlight of the tournament was the high-octane clash between India and Pakistan.
"It wasn’t just a game," Sharma remembered. "Two days before the match, we were locked in — tight security, fans everywhere, you could feel something special was coming. It felt like a festival."
India emerged victorious by six runs in a nail-biting, low-scoring encounter. Jasprit Bumrah's exceptional performance, taking 3 wickets for 14 runs, earned him the Player of the Match award.
Despite an early batting collapse, with the quick dismissals of Kohli, Rohit, and Axar, Rishabh Pant's aggressive innings of 42 runs off 31 balls steadied the ship, helping India reach a total of 119.
"On that pitch, his 42 was like scoring 70," Rohit remarked. "We knew 140 was par, but with our bowlers, even 119 could work."
Sharma lauded Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh for their impeccable execution of the game plan. "Bumrah is a weapon — he takes wickets and dries up runs. Arshdeep’s been brilliant too, and they were crucial in pushing the game in our favour."
From the electrifying atmosphere of the India-Pakistan match to the tense final in Barbados, Rohit Sharma's reflections pay tribute to a team that created unforgettable memories for the nation.
