Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra believes Jasprit Bumrah possesses the fitness and strength to excel in javelin throw, highlighting the crossover of athletic abilities. Bumrah's impressive 2024 performance includes 78 wickets in 15 Test matches, leading all fast bowlers globally in wickets and overs bowled.

Neeraj Chopra, India's Olympic gold medalist in javelin, has identified Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian cricket team's formidable fast bowler, as a potential javelin star. Chopra believes Bumrah possesses the necessary physical attributes and techniques to dominate the sport, were he not already a cricket icon.

Chopra shared his insights during a segment on Star Sports, hosted by Navjot Singh Sidhu. He emphasized Bumrah's exceptional fitness and strength as key factors that would translate well to javelin throwing.

"I think it would be a fast bowler for sure. So, I think a fully fit Jasprit Bumrah will be good at it," Chopra stated.

Bumrah's recent cricketing exploits further underscore his physical capabilities. In the first Test match against England, he achieved his 14th five-wicket haul in the first innings, showcasing his bowling prowess.

While England ultimately won the match, chasing down a target of 371 runs, Bumrah's individual performance highlighted his athleticism and skill.

Bumrah's statistics in 2024 are a testament to his remarkable talent. He has claimed 78 wickets in only 15 Test matches, making him the leading fast bowler globally during this period.

His dedication is further evidenced by the fact that he has bowled 410.4 overs, the most among all pace bowlers worldwide. This surpasses Mitchell Starc (362.3 overs) and Gus Atkinson (328 overs, 54 wickets).

Among Indian bowlers, only Ravindra Jadeja (400.1 overs) has exceeded 400 overs alongside Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj, despite playing the same number of matches, has bowled 355.3 overs.

Given his heavy workload, Bumrah is expected to be rested for the upcoming Test at Edgbaston. Siraj is likely to spearhead the pace attack, despite a less-than-stellar performance in the Headingley Test.

The second Test of the series is slated to commence on July 2 in Birmingham, where India will strive to level the series against England.

This discussion about Bumrah's potential in javelin illuminates the potential for athletes to transition between different sports, particularly those that share similar physical demands, such as fast bowling and javelin throwing.

The comments were made to promote the Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin throw event on July 5, to be broadcast on Star Sports.
